The Human Library Project
Logo, Poster Graphic Design, Creative Assets

Focus: Graphic Designer

Overview

Unlike a typical library, a human library lets participants “check out” people instead of books. Humans instead of books become the vessels for knowledge sharing. The IUPUI Human Library provided students with the opportunity to recognize and address their own stereotypes, prejudices, or general beliefs about diverse individuals and communities."

Purpose

IUPUI's Human Library Project was in need of a poster design and creative assets to use for their event. I was hired to create these items.

Process

I began by learning about the event and seeing how others have visualized the project. Then, in order to create a color palette, I visited the Indianapolis Public Library's website and pulled some color samples from their homes page. After bringing those into Illustrator, I edited them to make them a little more modern and bright.

Concept

The concept for the design came from my memories of being a child and spending time at the public library. I can recall browsing the isles of books, searching for the perfect ones. I would pull books and read a little in the stacks, sometimes sit right there on the ground and read the beginning and end to see if I was interested enough to finish it. Many times, I can remember peeking through the isles at other readers, sometimes strangers and sometimes friends, which is why I chose to hide/peek the text "Human" from behind the books.

I love the library and it will always be a special place for me. I hope you enjoy the design and video.
